Canton Police Department officers will direct traffic on Aug. 1 at the intersection of Reservoir Drive and Hickory Log Drive in front of Teasley Middle School where a traffic light is out, the department announced.

The traffic light is flashing red due to a recent lightning strike.

Drivers are advised to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Officers will be on site to direct traffic and safeguard pedestrians, particularly students and parents using the crosswalks. Police will be present at the beginning and end of the school day to assist with traffic management and ensure that everyone on the road adheres to traffic regulations.

"The safety of our students and community members is our top priority,” Police Chief Marty Ferrell said in a statement. “We encourage drivers to be vigilant and patient, especially during the busy start of the school year and while the traffic light is under repair."

According to Canton PD, the city is working with the signal's original installer and vendors to secure the necessary equipment for a full repair. An estimated completion time was not available.

Drivers are urged to follow the officers' directions and to drive cautiously in school zones.

“Your cooperation is essential in creating a safe environment for our students and the entire community,” the department said in a news release.
