A local firefighter recently graduated from public safety training and was sworn in as a deputy sheriff, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services announced.

Fire Apparatus Operator Drew Turner graduated from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center Regional Police Academy in Pickens County Sept. 20. On Sept. 23, Turner, a firefighter, advanced EMT and fire investigator for CCFES, was officially sworn in as a deputy sheriff by Sheriff Frank Reynolds during a special ceremony at the Cherokee County Public Safety Headquarters in Canton.

The sheriff deputizes CCFES fire investigators and SWAT medics who have completed basic law enforcement training so that they can use their law enforcement capabilities.

“FAO Turner’s hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community are truly commendable,” said Cherokee County Fire Chief Eddie Robinson.

In addition to this achievement, Turner was recently selected for a full-time position in the fire department’s fire investigations team. The CCFES Fire Investigations team consists of three full-time fire investigators who work to determine the cause and origin of fires throughout Cherokee County. They are supported by several firefighters in the field who are also certified fire investigators and assist with their investigations.

“CCFES is proud to support FAO Turner as he embarks on this new chapter in his career, and we are excited about the positive impact he will continue to make in our community,” the fire department said in a news release.
