1940 film was shot in Colonial Williamsburg

The Howards of Virginia is a 1940 film starring Cary Grant as Matt Howard and Martha Scott as Jane Peyton Howard. Based on Elizabeth Page's 1939 book The Tree of Liberty. Peyton is from a wealthy Williamsburg family, while Howard's parents are poor.

He returns from the Revolutionary War, and the duo marries. They have a daughter and a disabled son and live in the backwoods of Virginia, while her aristocratic family is outraged.

According to Mr. Williamsburg, 15 train cars came to the area with equipment to film part of the movie in Colonial Williamsburg. The rest was shot on Hollywood sound stages with exact replicas of the Virginia town having been constructed.
