    The Discord Chat purpose

The Discord App officially launched in 2015 as the brainchild of Jason Citron, who said there was no targeted audience and that the app is "centered around managing communities."

Discord advertises as a "group chat that is all fun and games," but a Northern Virginia mother shared that her teenager had a different experience. "Leslie," says her daughter attempted suicide and almost died because there were no protections on the app.

Methods of self-harm were found on Discord

DC News reports that Leslie's daughter found methods of self-harm on Discord, including cutting and anorexia. Teens cheered each other on by showing the cuts on their bodies; others said they were beautiful. Leslie claims some individuals told others to take their own lives by saying, "Go ahead and do it.".

Leslie's daughter tried to overdose on pills and called 911 herself. She received help in a psychiatric hospital and is now in recovery. If you or someone you know may be considering self-harm, please get in touch with the suicide hotline at 988 or text 'Hello' to 741741.
