    The Tavern is recommended highly

Only in Your State reveals that The Tavern in Abingdon, Virginia, was built in 1779 and is the oldest establishment of its kind in the state. The food is said to be a culinary delight, and this most popular inn and bar in the Commonwealth is recommended for every historian's bucket list.

Step inside and you'll find a cozy interior that will make you feel like you've traveled back in time by a few centuries. Hand-hewn exposed beams, stone walls, and dim lighting all add to the historic ambiance.

The Tavern is believed to be haunted

The Tavern is located at 222 East Main Street in Abingdon. Employees and patrons claim to have heard phantom footsteps and seen apparitions, which is why this inn and bar is listed as an officially haunted Virginia location.

One alleged ghost has been named the "Tavern tart" because she is believed to be a prostitute who a client murdered. She is said to stare at men through a window.
