Virginia law is clear about children and firearms

In 2022, Virginia Code § 18.2-56.2 went into effect, which penalizes adults who allow children to get their hands on guns. The law has not deterred incidents where minors end up shooting someone.

.It shall be unlawful for any person to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

On August 12, WTKR reported that a Virginia Beach woman was charged because one of her sons shot the other with an unsecured firearm. Now, USA Today reports that a Petersburg man is in critical condition after being shot by a two-year-old.

Virginians, please keep your firearms secure and away from children because state law indicates you will be charged.
