    Chesapeake City wins District 5 majors softball crown

    ELKTON — Chesapeake City Little League’s majors softball team captured a District 5 title on Thursday evening in a 3-2 victory over North East Little League.

    The win came on the second day of the tournament finale, after knocking off North East 14-13 in walk-off fashion on Wednesday evening to force the “if” game. Chesapeake City will advance to the state tournament, which is set to begin on July 6 at Southern Maryland Little League Youth Organization in Pomfret. Below is a recap of the two-day championship action.

    Game 1 Chesapeake City 14, North East 13

    Chesapeake City forced the “if” game on Wednesday night with a walk-off win after Chesapeake City’s Jordyn Sewell scored on a wild pitch. Both teams combined for 25 runs from the top half of the third through the middle half of the sixth inning. Trailing by four entering the sixth, North East tied the game with four runs, including a three-run double from Gemma Murray and an RBI single from Gabby Reyes.

    Sewell, Gabby Wolf, Skylar Penta and Kendall Schuster combined for nine hits and eight RBIs for Chesapeake City. Chesapeake City recorded 18 hits. North East’s Devyn Daley went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. Murray and Brooklyn Arrants each finished with a multi-RBI game for North East.

    Game 2 Chesapeake City 3, North East 2

    Chesapeake City clinched a spot in the state tournament with a one-run win the following night. Entering the top of the fifth tied at one, Chesapeake City drove in two runs off a two-run single from Madilyn Corrigan to put Chesapeake City up two. Corrigan went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs. After Chesapeake City took a 1-0 lead in the third, North East tied things in the home half of the fourth with an RBI from Gemma Murray. Murray and Kamryn Workman each finished with an RBI for North East.

    In the circle, Chesapeake City’s Gabby Wolf pitched a full six innings. Wolf struck out nine, allowed two earned runs and gave up eight hits. North East’s Gabby Reyes pitched six innings with two strikeouts.
