Bay Region’s Drought Conditions Prompt Fireworks Ban, Fishing Closure
A mostly dry past couple of weeks has led to drought conditions in Maryland and Virginia and has led to a rare fishing closure in part of Virginia and Maryland. One Virginia town on the Bay has even banned lighting off fireworks because it’s so dry. According to the...
Historic Gun Club-Turned-Mansion Destroyed in Fire Along North East River
A landmark property on the upper Bay’s North East River is nothing but a skeleton after a large fire last week. The 1792 building was the home of a local restaurant owner, who was thankfully not home at the time. But the homeowner’s pets’ live were tragically lost.

Ship That Struck Key Bridge in Norfolk, Owners of Containers Aboard Must Pay Up
It felt surreal to many to see the container ship Dali pass back through the site where the Key Bridge collapsed into mangled steel, then travel under the Bay Bridge on its way down the Bay. But business moves forward, so M/V Dali must unload the containers that survived the...
Four Boat-Friendly Products to Keep You Cool When the Heat Is On
The heat of a Chesapeake Bay summer is hard to describe to one who hasn’t experienced it. You might use terms such as, “face-melting,” “pig roast-esque,” and “inspiring Iceland.” And if your boat doesn’t have a cabin with air conditioning, you may be questioning your life’s decisions by this point in the summer. But never fear: we’re here for you, and don’t sell your boat just yet. We have some clever tools for all budgets that will help keep you cool when the heat is on.
Best Spots for Beachcombing the Chesapeake
The 11,500 miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline aren’t known first and foremost for their touristy beaches (we leave that to the Atlantic edge of the Delmarva peninsula). But if you’re looking for a place to get your toes into the sand to look for artifacts, sea glass, and shells, you’ll find plenty of secret little spots to explore.
Fireworks with a Twist: Reimagine Your 4th of July on the Bay
The Chesapeake offers ample opportunities for watching fireworks displays over the water. And if you’re on your boat, this is one of the greatest nights of the summer. The stress of late-night traffic, however, can dissuade many pyrotechnics enthusiasts from traveling to see fireworks. But don’t let that keep you inside this week, because some of the better firework shows aren’t located in urban areas: these off-the-beaten path displays rival the bigger shows, and share an element of Chesapeake Country charm that you won’t find anywhere else.

Baltimoreans Swim the Inner Harbor after 4-Decade Ban
Baltimore’s Harbor Splash made waves on Sunday, months after it was first announced. Some people who would never swim in the harbor watched in disbelief as 150 others enthusiastically jumped in, some in costumes, to make a big splash with a party atmosphere. It was the first legal swim...
Catch, Clean & Cook—VA Workshop Tackles Blue Catfish Start to Finish
If the Chesapeake’s invasive blue catfish are lemons, it’s time to make lemonade. On Thursday, June 20, fishery biologists from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), local celebrity anglers, and a handful of volunteers (including this correspondent) provided a hands-on, riverside field workshop for 30 aspiring anglers on the long fishing pier at Chickahominy Riverfront Park near Williamsburg.
