Watermen, Charter Captains Weigh in on Impact of New Rockfish Limits, Loss of Trophy Season
It’s going to be a lean year for those who like to catch or eat Atlantic striped bass—with still leaner times perhaps to come. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, which regulates inshore fishing for migratory species, has ordered new curbs, starting May 1, on both recreational and commercial catches of the popular finfish, also known as rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay region.

Proposed Chesapeake Bay Ferry Locations Revealed in Feasibility Study
A vision to bring a passenger ferry to stops around the Chesapeake Bay is moving forward, as a map of six initial proposed locations goes public. The idea of a ferry feasibility study was launched in 2022, when Visit Annapolis and Anne Arundel County submitted a grant application to the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Neighboring counties quickly saw a huge opportunity to connect different Bay communities and got on board. The Maryland counties of St. Mary’s, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Queen Anne’s and Somerset all contributed an initial $15,000 in matching funds for the feasibility study.
Bay Foundation Puts New Hope in Oysters for Water Restoration
The oyster news has been good already this year, as these keystone shellfish appear finally to be on the upswing after decades of dismal news. VA Anglers Push to Close Hickory Shad Limits Loophole
There is a disconnect in Virginia’s fishing regulations regarding hickory shad, and a group of anglers is trying to get it fixed. On hickory shad, the Virginia Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) states “Creel and length limits shall be the same as those set by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).” But VMRC has not set any regulations for hickory shad. In essence, there are no protections for hickory shad in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay, including rivers and tributaries.
Annapolis Acquires Final Piece of Historic Black Beach Resort Property
It doesn’t look like much, this 1940s era Chesapeake Bay beachfront cottage with the asbestos siding, but it once was the summer retreat of Dr. Parlett Moore, an early president of Coppin State University. And it sits on the last undeveloped piece of property that was part of a thriving Black beach resort in the days of Jim Crow segregation.

In November of 2022, we told the story of Jay Fleming and his incredible experience with an albino crab.
