Boat of the Week: Hatteras 64, the Essence of Pleasant Living
If high-end camping with all the luxuries is called “glamping,” what would you call the same concept in long-distance cruising? It would certainly entail a glamorous yacht like the Kroh’s Nest, a Hatteras 64 built in New Bern, North Carolina, in 2008. This sleek performance craft is moored in Deale, Maryland, just south of Annapolis, awaiting your boarding and inspection.
Best for Families: Fun-Filled Marinas on the Bay
There are some universal truths about cruising with kids. The first is that snacks, drinks, water toys and sunscreen (in that order) are paramount. Second is that even if you’re having fun on the hook, kids will also love staying at a marina, as long as there’s a pool and the promise of ice cream. Bonus points are awarded for marinas with a beach, game room, or any other place where they can have some fun without their parents hovering.
On Boats: The New Boston Whaler 210 Vantage
Boston Whaler’s new 210 Vantage shows off sleek runabout lines, but beneath them beats the heart of a seaworthy, multipurpose family utility vessel eager to take on a diverse portfolio of adventures around the Chesapeake and its rivers. We had an opportunity on a breezy day in January to...
Cole Brauer’s Record Solo Circumnavigation Inspires Women on the Bay and Beyond
Before this year, not too many casual boaters on the Bay had probably heard of the Global Solo Challenge, a single-handed, nonstop sailing race around the world by way of the three great capes. The skippers are almost always seasoned offshore sailors with decades of experience, but few would qualify as household names outside the sport of ocean racing.
Fishing Groups Sue over Rockfish Catch Limits
Two Maryland commercial fishing groups have filed suit challenging new striped bass harvest limits imposed on charter fishing businesses and watermen, arguing that they are “illegal, unnecessary and improperly premised.”. In a complaint filed March 8 in the U.S. District Court of Maryland, the Delmarva Fisheries Association and Maryland...
Bay Remembers Offshore Powerboat Racing Legend Art Lilly
The Chesapeake Bay powerboat racing community is remembering one of the most influential racers on the Bay, Art Lilly, who recently passed away at the age of 77. Lilly, who founded Lilly Sport Boats, is also one of the “founding fathers” of the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association (CBPBA). The Association says it all began around 1987, when a group of powerboaters would meet on Stoney Creek in Pasadena, Maryland, racing each other from the Stoney Creek Bridge to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and back.
Necropsy Reveals Parallels in Virginia Beach Humpback Whale Deaths
A week after two humpback whales washed up dead in Virginia Beach, marine biologists are revealing the findings of the necropsies (animal autopsies) conducted on those animals. And the two whales, which were both found dead on the same day, have some notable similarities. While they are not able to...

Bay Bridge 1-Year Eastbound Deck Replacement Begins This Month
The aging Bay Bridge is getting another round of structural repairs that will impact traffic—but not nearly as dramatically as the construction that began in 2019. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) will start replacing the deck (driving surface) of the Bay Bridge this month and expects to wrap it up by spring 2025.
Could MD Bottle Trade-in Bill Help Solve Plastic Pollution Problem?
Readers of a certain age might remember something called “deposit bottles,” those soft drink bottles you could take back to the store after you’ve emptied them and get a few cents back. They could be coming back thanks to a pair of bills working their way through the Maryland General Assembly.
Faces of the Bay: Pat Mahoney of Wild Country Seafood
Editor’s Note: In this edition of Faces of the Bay, we revisit a multi-generational family business we introduced readers to a few years back as “The Last Watermen of Annapolis”. Bay photographer James Ronayne captures Wild Country Seafood‘s Mahoney family, as its youngest generation steps up to work the water.
Cherry Blossoms Ready to Make an Early Entrance
It crept up quickly this year: the National Park Service (NPS) recently announced that cherry blossom viewing in the DMV region should peak between March 23rd and 26th. Around the Bay region already, more and more pink and white blooms are beginning to show, proving that even after all these years Mother Nature still enjoys keeping us on our toes.
Boat of the Week: Grady-White’s Capable, Reliable Powerhorse, the Fisherman 180
In June of 2023 our sister company, the Annapolis School of Seamanship, took delivery of three brand new Grady-White Fisherman 180 center consoles sponsored by Tri-State Marine. Throughout the summer and into the early fall, the boats were used extensively as the primary training boats for the Junior Captains youth program, as well as various adult training courses.
Port of Virginia Opens Wider Channel for Two-Way Ultra Large Vessel Traffic
Both of the Chesapeake Bay’s major ports are celebrating milestones this month. The Port of Baltimore just announced 2023 was a record-breaking year for cargo and the Port of Virginia opened an extra-wide shipping channel that allows ever-bigger ships to come and go. In Maryland, Governor Wes Moore shared...

VA County Buys James River Former Plantation for $17 Million
The Interstate 295 Highway Bridge over the tidal James River is a spectacular piece of human engineering. Located 15 miles downstream of the fall line at Richmond, the views from the bridge naturally catch the eye of anyone crossing it. You might notice the river far below. But you might not know the centuries of history held by the property next to the river, the expansive Varina Farms.

Two Dead Humpback Whales Found in Virginia Beach in One Day
A dead humpback whale caused a stir in Virginia Beach this weekend, washing ashore on a busy stretch of the beach near 25th Street. On Monday, marine biologists performed a necropsy to determine how it died. Believe it or not, this whale is one of two dead humpbacks found on the same day in Virginia Beach.
Green Beer Races Bring Shenanigans to Annapolis
The signs of spring are in the air. Daffodils are budding, robins are chirping from branches, and in Annapolis, residents of the Eastport neighborhood are racing each other with serving trays of green beer. Mother Nature may be a bit confused about which season it is, but on March 9 at the Eastport Democratic Club, the Green Beer Races are a sure sign warm weather is on the way.
