As Benwood’s public works director David McLaughlin explained recently on River Talk radio, he and Police Chief Frank Longwell attended a meeting back in late winter 2023 during which a $3 million deal was struck with the Governor’s Office. The money was to come out of the Governor’s contingency fund, and finally, the people of Benwood would be rid of the nightmare that’s haunted them for decades.

Aspire Program marks a new era with new name, new location
The adult education Aspire Program at Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) held their final graduation, July 19th. With EGCC dissolving due to financial issues, the Aspire Program ending an era but is beginning a new one and moving forward with a new name at the Jefferson County Educational Service Center.
Lawrence County coroner called to incident in Shenango Township
The Lawrence County coroner has been called to an incident in Shenango Township Monday evening, according to county dispatchers. County 911 confirmed that a call came in just before 6 p.m. to an incident at the rear of a house in the 500 block of Rose Stop Road. Shenango police are investigating.

Detroit man pleas guilty to drug trafficking operation in Beaver County
PITTSBURGH ― A Michigan man has pleaded guilty to his involvement in drug trafficking that was moving illegal substances across Beaver County. According to the Department of Justice, the guilty plea for drug trafficking charges was entered by 33-year-old Andre Brent Steel on Friday. In a public release, the court said this plea comes with a nine-year sentence in federal prison and four years of supervised release.
Lisbon bridge replacement project underway
Wilson said the current bridge was built in the late 60s and has major problems such as the corrosion of its steel beams. It has been on ODOT's list for repairs or replacement for years but finding funding for big-ticket projects isn't easy for villages the size of Lisbon.
