CHESTERTOWN — The annual Memorial Day parade in Chestertown honors military service members, specifically those who lost their lives.

It’s a chance to reflect on their sacrifice.

But it’s also in the aftermath of the Chestertown Tea Party, and it was a small turnout this year.

However, that doesn’t rob the importance of it.

In a press release, Katy Weddell, head of Kent County Memorial Day Committee talked about that.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is that this is a parade for locals. It’s a chance for locals to enjoy the holiday, their home and each other. It’s a chance to experience the true meaning of Memorial Day long after the tourists are gone.”

Sponsored by Dixon Valve, the parade began at 10 a.m. Monday, ahead of the rain, and proceeded down High Street, finally ending at the corner of Court and High streets.

A short program followed, featuring a special presentation by Sumner Hall with remarks by former U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest.

As she did this year, Weddell is looking for volunteers to jump on board for next year. They can either be onlookers or participants.

“Our goal is to increase community participation and awareness of this very important day to both remember and celebrate our military.”
