Benedictine football player dies in Leavenworth County crash
LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - An incoming freshman Benedictine College football player died Monday in a crash in Leavenworth County. The Kansas Highway Patrol said 17-year-old Caleb Stricker was traveling northbound on U73 when his vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and struck a truck with a trailer head on.
Barton college approves 5% increase to salary budget for 2025
As discussed at this month’s study session, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees approved an operational budget and published budget for the 2025 fiscal year at Monday’s regular meeting. The budget remains revenue neutral, keeping collected tax dollars the same as the year prior, estimated to garner $9,574,623 in taxes.
Prairie Paws CEO says residents can expect new look and hours once Emporia Animal Shelter operations contract goes into effect next month
Several changes are on the way for the Emporia Animal Shelter with the new operations contract set to go into effect in just a little less than two weeks. The contract will begin August 4 and will see Prairie Paws at the helm of the shelter as announced earlier this year following action by Emporia City Commissioners. During KVOE’s Morning Show Monday, Prairie Paws Director Vanessa Cowie spoke to the various changes coming to the center from both a visual and operational perspective.

Shawnee commission OKs plan for small subdivision in western part of city
The Shawnee Planning Commission has given the green light for a new roughly 11-acre single-family subdivision on Mize Road in the far western reaches of the city. On July 15, the commission gave its approval to a preliminary plat and rezoning request for the proposed Maple Ridge Subdivision in the 6500 block of Mize Road in a less densely developed area just east of the Kansas River.
