I think I have found the perfect restaurant. This restaurant is in the downtown area of Downers Grove. The name of this restaurant is Foxtail.
I am constantly on the lookout for the best possible restaurants to try out and review for all of my loyal subscribers. Lately, I have been on a Mediterranean food kick. I was looking through hundreds of restaurants when I came across a listing on Google for a place called Foxtail in Downers Grove.
I did not know what to expect, but I was anticipating something small with somewhat average food. Was I ever wrong?
I went to Foxtail on a Saturday evening. Little did I know that this restaurant was one of the most popular in downtown Downers Grove. I was somewhat lucky that the weather was bad, so people were not yet pouring in. I was able to snag a table inside, though they also have seating in front of the restaurant, which the workers were wiping down from the rain.
The interior is somewhat upscale and modern. The clientele looked high-end but also casual, giving more of a North Shore vibe. The waitstaff was on point and impeccable. As soon as we were seated, our waters were immediately filled, and the waitress gave us some time to look over the menu.
The menu is very unique with a heavy influence of Mediterranean spices and ingredients, mixed with Asain and European flavors. They also take all of these influences and make comfort foods. The menu was very exciting, and I literally could not wait to try as many items as I could.
The first item that we ordered was the spinach pies. The pies were filled with garlic notes and other spices. The dough was slightly thicker than I expected, as I was anticipating more of a phyllo dough. There was a dipping sauce that tasted like tzatziki with some mint undertones. The spinach pie was delicious, but I do not think I would order it again, just because there are many other items on the menu that I feel would be better.
We then ordered one of their flatbreads, opting for the pistachio flatbread. The flatbread consisted of mortadella, mozzarella, pistachio, watercress, and honey. This flatbread was the absolute star of the show. The honey was perfectly embedded on top of the flatbread with its delicious melted cheese. A perfect dusting of pistachio was on top of each slice. The watercress gave a great crunch. I probably could have ordered two of these. It was that good.
Foxtail also has many seafood items on their menu, including a full raw bar and traditional cooked seafood.
I went with the tuna poke bowl, and my wife had the shrimp poke bowl. The bowls consisted of cucumbers, spicy mayo, white rice, and other Asian spices. The freshness of the tuna in my bowl was obvious—it tasted like it was same-day fresh. There was not a hint of a fishy taste; the tuna just melted in my mouth. The vegetables were all fresh. Everything was absolutely perfect.
We were so stuffed that we did not try any dessert. It was an absolutely perfect evening.
I was so excited about my experience that I learned they also have a second location in Des Plaines. This location is very different from the Downers Grove location. I went there for lunch with my wife. It is in the back lot of the Spines, right off of a man-made lake. The actual building looks like a church with large stained glass windows and a large cross on the windows. It is absolutely huge and completely beautiful. This location also has a very large outdoor patio overlooking the lake.
We decided to sit outside. The main difference between this location and the Downers Grove location was the service. It was very lackluster. Our server looked aggravated and was not very attentive. The food was delicious but not as good as the Downers Grove location. We ordered identical meals. It was still delicious, but the bill was higher at this location. I do not know why. I would say this location is more for cocktails and enjoying a drink on their patio overlooking the lake. But for food, I would go to the Downers Grove location.
If you want a fantastic evening with some of the best food you will ever eat, I cannot stress enough to check out Foxtail in Downers Grove.
I give it a very rare rating of 9 out of 10. Definitely check them out for yourself.ReplyForwardAdd reaction
