Chris Getz: White Sox have 'players that have a lot to prove to themselves'

(670 The Score) Since taking over as White Sox general manager in late August, Chris Getz has set course on overhauling the roster.

The White Sox are in the infancy of Getz’s plan, which means filling the roster with players looking to prove themselves. It's a mix of players remaining from last season and veteran newcomers who hope to reclaim their place in the league.

As spring training is about to open, Getz is hopeful for what the White Sox can accomplish this season.

“I anticipate this group blending in together, working together towards what it takes to be successful to be a major league club,” Getz told reporters on a Zoom call Monday morning. “Do I think we are as an organization where we need to be to be a championship-caliber club? We’re not there yet. We do have a lot of players that have a lot to prove to themselves.

“You go across the roster and you look at (Andrew) Benintendi, Luis Robert, Andrew Vaughn, Paul DeJong, Nicky Lopez, Yoan Moncada, we got the catchers in (Martin) Maldonado and (Max) Stassi, players that really formed their careers. Going into this spring training, I feel like they are not only highly motivated to prove not only that they are major league-caliber players, but they know that they have to come together for us to be successful.”

The White Sox bottomed out last season, going 61-101 in a disappointing campaign. The team fired executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn in August. Previously the White Sox's farm director, was promoted to general manager nine days later.

The White Sox open their regular season on March 28, when they host the Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field.
