(670 The Score) Cubs first baseman Michael Busch is on a tear at the plate lately, tying a franchise record by homering in five games.

Acquired by the Cubs in a trade with the Dodgers in the offseason, the 26-year-old Busch has impressed early in his Chicago tenure, hitting .327 with six homers, 12 RBIs and a 1.141 OPS in 16 games. As good as Busch has been at the plate, his strong production isn’t necessarily a surprise to his Cubs teammates, even though he’s a newcomer to the team.

They saw his talent and mindset in spring training, as second baseman Nico Hoerner explained on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s cool to see teammates do incredible things like that,” Hoerner said. “(Christopher) Morel, I think, was at five games (homering) last year or there have been stretches where we’ve seen Seiya (Suzuki) do incredible things. It’s just fun to see, especially for a guy who’s proving himself at this level and to this team. It’s cool. I was saying yesterday, it’s a hot streak, but he’s like the opposite of a roller coaster type of person or player. I feel like he’s just super steady in how he handles just everything. I’ve never seen him like worked up or on edge about anything. So it kind of makes it even easier to believe in him.

“He’s been a lot of fun to play with.”

Hoerner pinpointed an area where Busch has flourished.

“His pitch recognition is pretty impressive,” Hoerner said. “A lot of those at-bats that he’s homered in, several of them have been two-strike homers and there’s been a take before that’s like incredibly impressive and is usually an out for anyone else. I feel like he’s a guy that can match up well with any type of pitcher. His strike zone awareness is really impressive.”

Cubs outfielder Ian Happ echoed Hoerner’s sentiments.

“He’s doing such a great job for us,” Happ said on the Bernstein & Holmes Show. “Just the quality of the at-bat, the ability to take balls and borderline pitches and get himself into hitters’ counts has been pretty impressive.”
