Caleb Williams' quarterback coach Will Hewlett: 'He's hungry for structure' of NFL game

(670 The Score) It’s no secret that new Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had a problem with ball security at times during his college career.

Williams had 33 fumbles across three seasons , the first at Oklahoma and the last two at USC. In the eyes of Williams’ personal quarterbacks coach Will Hewlett, the fumbling issues could largely be traced to Williams being asked to “do a little too much, kind of hero ball.”

And in Hewlett’s mind, that’s also a prime example of how Williams is going to adjust his game in the NFL and fit in.

“He’s hungry for structure, which is tough with the college game,” Hewlett said. “You’re a college coach, obviously you can recruit guys, but you can’t necessarily draft a left tackle that’s going to be able to a lock to not give up any sacks. And so Caleb is a competitor. I think you’ve got to find the fine line there of listen, ‘We may risk a turnover here or there with this style of play, but it’s ultimately the reason why they’re able to win games and put all the points up that they’re able to.’

“The pro game is going to be so good for him because the structure level is going to be so much higher, and he’s not going to have to be the best player on the field every single play. He’s got Keenan Allen, (DJ) Moore, Cole Kmet, a bunch of really good, talented high-level NFL players (with him) where his goal is to just get the ball in their hands. The structure of the NFL game will work to his skill sets nicely, and he’s ready for that.”

Williams first began working with Hewlett when he was in seventh grade, Hewlett said, and they’ve been working intensely for the past eight weeks or so in Florida to prepare Williams for his professional career.

Hewlett also believes the 22-year-old Williams is prepared to handle the spotlight.

“He’s got the type of personality where you can totally dig into him a little bit and he’s just going to roll with it. He’s not affected by it. He’s wired the right way. He knows what he brings to the table in terms of the spotlight and he’s aware of it. He’s built right for it.”
