The Chicago Blackhawks took care of two important open items early in the offseason. Following season's end, Alex Vlasic was rewarded with a new six-year deal . Days later, forward Lukas Reichel received a new two-year, prove-it contract . Now, the team is bringing back an important depth piece and someone who was critical to Rockford's success in 2023-24.

After leading the Rockford IceHogs in points with 63, forward Brett Seney is returning to the Blackhawks organization on a one-year, two-way deal. Seney has appeared in 11 total NHL games in two seasons with the organization. However, he has appeared in 127 regular-season games and nine postseason games with the Rockford IceHogs in that time span.

As mentioned, Seney led the IceHogs with 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists) this past season. The 28-year-old veteran provides some noted veteran experience for the youth down in Rockford while also providing another option for recall if the team needs to fill injury-related holes.

Seney spent the first four years of his professional career as a member of the New Jersey Devils organization. Seney appeared in 53 NHL games with the Devils and another 129 AHL games. Then, Seney spent one season in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization before joining the Blackhawks organization in 2022-23.

The Blackhawks have a number of other decisions to make before the NHL Draft and free agency this summer. Key unrestricted free agents Tyler Johnson, Colin Blackwell, Nikita Zaitsev, Jaycob Megna, and Jarred Tinordi are all expected to leave in free agency. However, restricted free agents Taylor Raddysh, Joey Anderson, MacKenzie Entwistle, and Reese Johnson will all need to either receive new contracts, or move on to another team.

Despite a number of major moves already occurring this offseason, the Blackhawks are far from done with their roster decision making before the draft and free agency.
