Bernstein & Holmes: Jed Hoyer, Cubs have a 'very entitled point of view' about the current state of their club

(670 The Score) As the Cubs have gone 10-14 in their past 24 games, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer and others in the organization have nonetheless struck a hopeful tone.

Notably, Hoyer stressed Tuesday that he wasn’t all that worried about the club’s struggling offense, which has now produced just 23 runs in its past nine games. Hoyer even pointed out that the Cubs’ offense had, until recently, been producing better than the dangerous Braves’ offense.

In the mind of Score midday host Laurence Holmes, that viewpoint is misguided. The Cubs have reasons to be concerned.

“They are very comfortable,” Holmes said. “The Cubs are acting like a team that’s been successful over the past couple seasons. They are acting like that they are a team that was in the playoffs last year when we saw them crash and burn at the end of the season. It’s a very entitled point of view that Jed has right now of his team.”

Fellow host Dan Bernstein pointed out that the Cubs’ pythagorean record is 25-25. That’s a metric that projects what a team’s record should be based on its run differential. The Cubs have a +2 run differential through the first 50 games, over which they sit at 27-23.

“We are one-third of the way through the season,” Bernstein said. “And to say, ‘Well, we’re obviously better than this.’ No, you’re not. You’re not obviously anything.”
