4 Chicago Red Stars Players in Action During the International Break

    By Joe Chatz,

    2024-05-29

Four members of the Chicago Red Stars will be active on the pitch during the current international window.

Mallory Swanson and Sam Staab were called into the United States Women’s National Team camp, the first under new head coach Emma Hayes. They'll play two friendlies against South Korea in Colorado and Minnesota, respectively. Swanson will be looking to add to her 90 appearances, 32 goals, and 27 assists with the senior national team as they embark on a new era.

Part of that new era was the inclusion of Staab in the USWNT, the first senior call-up for Chicago’s center back. Staab got the call-up just before she extended her own consecutive NWSL starts streak to 100 when the Red Stars were in New Jersey .

The big Red Stars omission from the squad is the injured Alyssa Naeher, who missed the final two matches before the break with a thigh injury.

Sydney Schneider has been the Red Stars' backup with Naeher out and will potentially get some game time in Brazil in one of Jamaica’s two friendlies in South America. Schneider has consistently gotten call-ups into the national team but her appearances have been sparse over the years.

Natalia Kuikka and Finland have two crucial matches against the Netherlands as they hope to qualify for the W EURO tournament through League A competition. All four teams in Group 1 enter this phase of qualifiers with three points, but Kuikka’s Finland side is at the bottom of the group on goal differential. They’ll have their work cut out for them against a top-10 team in the world.
