The Chicago Cubs' starting pitching has largely been a non-issue so far this season. Instead, the bats and the bullpen have been more concerning. However, there is concern with the starting pitching at the minor-league level.

Last week, Cubs' top pitching prospect Cade Horton suffered an injury in his start with Triple-A Iowa and was removed. After undergoing examination in Chicago, Horton has ultimately been shut down for three-to-four weeks due to a right lat strain. Following the shutdown, he will build back up and eventually return to Triple-A Iowa. Per Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Horton will rehab at the Cubs' complex in Arizona.

Horton has split his time in 2024 between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. Horton was dominant in four starts at Double-A, pitching to a minuscule 1.10 ERA in 16.1 innings. Factor in the 18 strikeouts and just two walks and you have an incredible body of work. However, Horton struggled a little more in Triple-A, accumulating a 7.50 ERA in five starts (18.0 innings) with 22 strikeouts and 11 free passes.

Horton will be back with Iowa at some point this season. However, the injury likely derails any chances of making it to the majors in 2024.

Daniel Palencia Activated, Optioned to Triple-A

Following a rehab stint with the Iowa Cubs, RHP Daniel Palencia was activated from the 15-day IL on Monday. With his activation, Palencia was optioned back to Triple-A. As of now, there is no room for Palencia in Chicago.

The flame thrower pitched in seven games at the major-league level this season. However, a 6.55 ERA leaves a lot to be desired. His 6.75 ERA in 10 appearances at Iowa is less impressive, but Palencia can now keep working on things in Iowa and possibly get another shot with the big club at some point.

Palencia has the stuff, with a triple-digit fastball in his arsenal. However, when the control is off, it doesn't matter how hard you throw. Palencia will work on exactly that in the minors.
