White Sox Losing Streak Hits Historic 14 Games, Woodford DFA'd as Cannon Gets Second Chance

The Chicago White Sox are making history in the worst way possible. Their loss to the Boston Red Sox Thursday night marked their 14th consecutive defeat, setting a franchise record for longest losing streak . Boston teed off on White Sox pitching to the tune of 14 runs on 24 hits, including seven runs charged to starter Jake Woodford.

Chicago announced Friday that Woodford has been designated for assignment. The 27-year-old spent his first four big-league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching in both the starter and reliever role.

The White Sox signed him to a minor-league contract with a non-roster invite to Spring Training in November. Chicago called him up in place of injured starter Mike Clevinger.

The righty struggled in his White Sox debut, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. Teams have seven days to claim or trade for Woodford; if he goes unclaimed, he can return to the White Sox or elect free agency.

Second Time's a Charm?

In a corresponding move, the South Siders promoted starting pitcher Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte. The call-up marks the rookie's second stint with the big-league club. Cannon made three starts for the Pale Hose, pitching to a 7.24 ERA.

After a solid debut against the Kansas City Royals, the 23-year-old got roughed up in starts against the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed 10 earned runs in 8.2 innings, leading to his demotion.

Unfortunately, Chicago's former second-round pick didn't fare much better in Charlotte. He compiled a 6.43 ERA in six starts since being sent down.

What's On Tap Next?

Jake Woodford's performance would suggest that he'll clear waivers and likely be outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte if he forgoes free agency. He's a member of the 40-man roster , as is Cannon, leaving the White Sox an opportunity to make an addition.

Cannon will hopefully regain some semblance of the promise he showed in his MLB debut. Nevertheless, the White Sox will need his arm and many others to trudge through an abysmal season.
