Jon Heyman believes Pete Alonso is a more realistic trade target for the Cubs than Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

(670 The Score) In need of a boost for their inconsistent lineup, the Cubs could soon look to the trade market with the hope of adding a slugger. Two names in particular have emerged as possibilities in the rumor mill.

Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Mets first baseman Pete Alonso are a pair of players who could potentially become available for a trade, but Jon Heyman of MLB Network believes only one would realistically be available for the Cubs.

Heyman doesn’t see the Blue Jays parting ways with Guerrero despite Toronto having a disappointing season to date.

“It would take some courage,” Heyman said. “I don’t think they have it there. So, I'm with them that they’re not going to trade Vlad Guerrero. So, I don’t think you have that option, but certainly Guererro would cost twice as much as Alonso because he’s got two years to go (on his contract) instead of this year.

“Alonso is probably the most logical guy. I mean, they might go for somebody even cheaper. If Alonso isn’t available, you got to look around. Josh Bell, somebody like that, maybe. But they definitely need a slugger in that lineup.”

Heyman pointed to the Blue Jays’ failed pursuit of superstar two-way player Shohei Ohtani this offseason as a factor for likely keeping Guerrero as fans have become frustrated in Toronto.

Guerrero, 25, is hitting .292 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs this season. The Blue Jays are 32-33 and in fourth place for the AL East while trailing the division-leading Yankees by 13 games.

Alonso, 29, is hitting .240 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs. He's set to become a free agent after this season. The Mets have a 28-36 record and are in fourth place in the NL East. They trail the division-leading Phillies by 16.5 games.

The Cubs are 32-34 and in a three-way tie for second place in the NL Central. After an off day Monday, they open a three-game road series against the Rays on Tuesday at Tropicana Field.
