Kusama back in Chicago at WNDR Museum

The WNDR Museum unveiled Monday the Chicago premiere of artist Yayoi Kusama's biggest immersive mirror installation, "Love Is Calling."

The big picture: Kusama is considered one of the most celebrated contemporary artists working today. Her immersive, mirrored rooms have traveled the globe and her use of polka dots and bright colors have become her trademarks.

    • "Love Is Calling" premiered in 2013, but this will be the first time the massive room is on display in Chicago.
    • There will also be audio recordings of Kusama reading love poems in Japanese.

The intrigue: The 95-year-old Kusama was a fixture in the 1960s New York City contemporary art scene but didn't find global success until decades later.

    • In 2017, her works went on a celebrated North American tour , stopping at several major museums, but did not come to Chicago.
    • She currently has over 20 infinity-mirrored rooms on exhibit worldwide.

Flashback: When the WNDR Museum opened in the West Loop in 2018, it featured one of Kusama's works as a centerpiece.

The museum also just announced a new WNDR Lounge, which will offer cocktails and snacks and will be accessible to both ticketed and non-ticketed guests during museum hours.

If you go: Tickets are $32, or $22 for children ages 12 and under. They must be purchased in advance.

    • The museum is open Monday-Thursday noon-8pm, Friday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sundays 10am-6pm.
