Yan Gomes designated for assignment as Cubs sign catcher Tomas Nido

The Cubs have designated veteran catcher Yan Gomes for assignment and signed catcher Tomas Nido to the active roster, they announced Wednesday.

Gomes, 36, was hitting .154 with two home runs and seven RBIs over 33 games this season. He had been with the Cubs since 2022.

Nido, 29, hit .229 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 32 games for the Mets before they released him earlier this week.

The Cubs host the Giants on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game series at Wrigley Field.
