Cubs slugger surprisingly linked to Yankees in potential blockbuster trade

The Chicago Cubs are in last place in the National League Central entering Friday, and it could be time to unload some of their major talent.

Chicago started the season with contention hopes, but things haven’t gone according to plan for Craig Counsell’s ball club. As injuries continue to mount for the 38-44 Cubs, their status as sellers has become increasingly likely.

It’s been understood in league circles that Chicago would be open to moving one of its mid-level talents like Patrick Wisdom or Kyle Hendricks.

A new report indicates that the Cubs could also be shopping around one of their most prized assets, however.

The Athletic's MLB staff revealed on Friday that Chicago will likely entertain offers for its star slugger Cody Bellinger as July 30 approaches. Bellinger was involved in trade discussions last season, but many felt Chicago had moved passed the idea of trading Bellinger as it seeks to fortify its lineup. The Athletic’s report reveals something else entirely.

“With the Cubs struggling to gain traction in the playoff race, teams like the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers have recently had a noticeable scouting presence around the club,” The Athletic’s MLB staff said. “If the trend continues for the Cubs, Bellinger’s name will likely become a much-discussed name again near the deadline, as it was last season … He’s still a well-rounded, productive player who hits left-handed and creates flexibility by being able to handle first base and all three outfield positions.”

Bellinger is hitting .271/ .331/ .428 this season with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 269 at-bats.

The former National League Most Valuable Player and World Series Champion could provide a legitimate boost to a contender like the Yankees, but he’s not producing at some massive rate that can move the needle for the struggling Cubs.

A trade could make sense for Chicago, Bellinger, and others. Will Jed Hoyer make a bold move while Bellinger’s value is still high?
