Forget all of the awards and #1 hits... this is how you know you've made it. Last night, Lainey Wilson opened for The Rolling Stones at Chicago's Soldier Field stadium for their second night at the venue, and she also joined them on stage to perform "Dead Flowers" with Mick and the boys. I've always heard some Rolling Stones influence in Lainey's music, and she has a very unique brand of country that does contain a lot of rock elements, especially from bands that were so influential in the 1960's and 70's, so this was a natural fit and incredible pairing. Of course, "Dead Flowers" was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and included on their classic 1971 album
Sticky Fingers . It was written during a time when the band, and specifically Keith Richards, was greatly influenced by country due to his friendship with Gram Parsons. Sticky Fingers as a whole project does have country influence in the sound, especially the guitar playing style à la Richards, and even former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor (who left the group in 1974). If I had to guess, I'd say that album likely influenced Lainey quite a bit too, and she certainly added the perfect amount of twang for the country-inspired tune. And actually, this tour is the first time in years that "Dead Flowers" has appeared as part of the official concert set list for the Rolling Stones, and Tyler Childers also got on stage to sing it with them back in June. Obviously, having some of the genres most popular country artists of the moment sing on "Dead Flowers" just makes sense, so it's cool to see them bringing the song back to the live show in this way and for this reason. You can watch Lainey crush it in the video below: https://youtu.be/8DvEflRgjZA?t=1 Core members of the Rolling Stones in Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood will perform in 16 different cities in total over the next several months, where they’ll play a combination of classics, deep cuts and some tunes songs from their aforementioned new album, as well. Other country artists and acts in Tyler Childers, Red Clay Strays and The War and Treaty are also slated to open, or have already opened, different shows on the summer tour.
