Kyle Davidson, take a bow. Although not spending on the top names in free agency, the Chicago Blackhawks will be a better team on paper this season. After adding Tyler Bertuzzi , Teuvo Teravainen , and Alec Martinez this morning, the Hawks made four additional signings on Monday.
Per reports, goalie Laurent Brossoit, forward Patrick Maroon, forward Craig Smith, and forward Joey Anderson have all signed short-term deals with the Hawks. Brossoit's contract is two years, while the other two veteran newcomers signed for one season. The Hawks are also bringing back Anderson on a two-year deal.
Brossoit was the backup goalie in Winnipeg this past season. Although he only played 23 games (22 starts) he posted a 15-5-2 record, 2.00 GAA , and .927 save percentage. With the $3.3 million AAV Brossoit is getting from Chicago, he will surely set a new career high in games played alongside Petr Mrazek.
As for Maroon, the three-time Stanley Cup champ is signing for $1.3 million . The gritty winger spent 2023-24 with the Minnesota Wild and Boston Bruins, suiting up for 51 games and tallying 16 points . Entering the 2024-25 season, Maroon should bring a wealth of experience to the bottom-six.
As for Craig Smith, he too will bring a wealth of experience to the bottom-six. Having spent the 2023-24 season with Dallas Stars, the Hawks saw plenty of Smith. The $1 million contract for Smith is low-risk, and perfect as Smith contributed 11 goals in 75 games with the Stars. The long-time Nashville Predator is a familiar face to the Blackhawks.
Finally, Joey Anderson returns to the Blackhawks. After a solid season as a defensive forward, the Blackhawks did not offer Anderson a qualifying offer. However, they got a deal done to keep Anderson in Chicago for two seasons at $800K per year .
Kyle Davidson has very much improved the roster on paper entering the 2024-25 season. Likely done, barring any crazy additions, the Blackhawks should look much better next season on the ice.
