Pritkzer will join meeting with Biden regarding president's candidacy

Gov. JB Pritzker will join several Democratic governors in a meeting with President Biden on Wednesday over concerns about the president's candidacy, sources tell Axios Chicago.

The big picture: Pritzker is a surrogate for the Biden campaign, but his name has been mentioned as an emergency replacement if the president chooses to step down from the ticket after last week's debate performance .

Driving the news: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, convened a call with Democratic governors Monday afternoon to discuss concerns about Biden's fitness to be the nominee. The call reportedly didn't include White House or Biden campaign staff.

    • The call reportedly led Biden to convene this meeting, which some governors are attending in person.
    • Pritzker originally was going to join the call virtually, but according to the Sun-Times , is now heading to Washington, D.C. in person.

Context: Pritzker will be welcoming Democrats from all over the country next month as Chicago hosts the Democratic National Convention. Biden had all but secured the party nomination until a disastrous debate performance last week left many party delegates publicly calling for a new candidate.

Yes, but: The Biden campaign has rejected any calls for the president to step down from his reelection bid, and the DNC may move the virtual nomination process up to the middle of July to squash party dissent.

Reality check: Biden aides are "freaking the f--- out" this week, writes Axios political reporter Alex Thompson .

The vibe: Even though this meeting is sudden, sources tell NBC that the governors are still in support of the Biden campaign.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
