CHICAGO — Choose Chicago, the tourism department of the city, has placed new markers in the city to celebrate Route 66’s upcoming centennial.

“Originating at Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue, Route 66 is one of the most important and historic west-bound arteries connecting America to the heart of the country – Chicago. We are proud of its history and profound impact on our city,” said Rich Gamble, Interim President and CEO. “With these new initiatives, we are refreshing our relationship with the ‘Mother Road’ and ensuring that visitors from all over the world can experience the magic of Route 66 throughout Chicago.”

In downtown Chicago, signage was placed near the Art Institute.

Route 66 began in 1926 as one of the first US highways. Even though it was finally decommissioned in the 1980s due to the vast expressway system, a centennial celebration is planned for 2026.

The tours, titled “Route 66 Neighborhoods by Trolley”, will take attendees through Chicago neighborhoods along Route 66.

Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
