BROOKFIELD, Ill. — Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s two-month-old Mexican wolf pup now has a name.

After more than 10,000 votes were collected across five days, Sierra was the top selection. The name Sierra is Spanish for “mountain range,” paying homage to the Mexican wolf’s native range near the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico.

    Other choices included:

    • Esperanza —Spanish for “hope”— each new litter of pups brings hope that the species will continue to thrive.
    • Alma —Spanish for “soul”—many people have a deep connection with the wolves.
    • Kelly —the namesake of natural landmarks where Mexican wolves have been reintroduced.

Sierra joins her sister, Molly, older brother Ahote, and parents, Vivilette and Amigo, at Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s Regenstein Wolf Woods habitat.
