How to help pets cope with Fourth of July fireworks

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Between parties, barbecues, and fireworks the Fourth of July can be tough on your pets.

Dylan Frederickson, owner, founder, and ceo of Boulevard Veterinary in Chicago, said if your pet is afraid of the nonstop noise from fireworks, you should place your pet in an interior room away from the sound.

“Generally, pets, if they're frightened, they do want to be in their home. So, it's really just about minimizing that noise penetration as much as possible for them and putting them in a soothing, calming environment,” Frederickson said.

The fear of fireworks could push pets into risky behavior.

“Cats that would actually bolt through screen windows sometimes on upper floors because of their fear or fright over a loud noise or a bang.”

Keeping those pets in an interior room with a fan or noise machine to help drown out the noise can help keep those pets safe.

There are also prescription anti anxiety medications for pets.

“There are other medications that your veterinarian can prescribe, as long as they know your pet and know their needs, that can help reduce anxiety.”

Fredrickson says some pet owners had success with thundershirts on the Fourth of July. Thundershirts are tight shirts for your dog that mimic the feeling of a comforting hug.
