(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A South Side native who walked away from gang life is now looking to give back to the community through mentorship.

Lakisha Hunter is the founder and owner of That Jerk Spot, which deploys food trucks around Chicago. In high school, Hunter was the leader of a gang, but walked away to pursue her culinary dreams.

Since starting her food truck and catering business That Jerk Spot , she has gone on to write a book “Rise Above the Ordinary - The Life Behind Her Smile.”

Now, she is giving back to youth in the community through a mentorship program, Rise Above the Ordinary.

Rise Above the Ordinary is a four week culinary training program that helps meet not only culinary needs, but also social development needs.

“The youth can now cause a major transition in their communities of doing better, bringing down the violent rate, you know, and giving them some to do because there's, there's not much for them to do.”
