(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hook, line, and sinker: phishing scams are catching even the savviest users off guard.

A new BBB study reveals phishing email and text scams nearly doubled in 2023 reaching a record high of over 9,000 reports. Phishing continues to be successful, because of its adaptability to various forms of communication.

These fake messages are designed to trick people into reacting to notices of problems with their legitimate accounts, deliveries, or utilities and contain fake links which end up putting them in direct contact with the fraudsters.

Consumers or businesses are advised to reach out to a company directly if an email or text message indicates a problem with your account.
