Quigley wants Biden to step aside

U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) will face Democratic colleagues Monday for the first time since calling on President Biden to step aside in the presidential race .

Why it matters: Quigley represents the North Side of Chicago, a city that will host the Democratic National Convention in August.

Zoom out: Quigley, who has been in office since 2009, joins a chorus of Democrats around the country who are trying to nudge Biden out amid concerns that his age will cause problems for Democrats running further down the ballot.

What he's saying: "Mr. President, your legacy is set. We owe you the greatest debt of gratitude. The only thing that you can do now to cement that for all time and prevent utter catastrophe is to step down and let someone else do this," Quigley said during an MSNBC interview on Friday .

    • Quigley is one of five House Democrats to publicly call on Biden to withdraw, joining Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Angie Craig (D-Minn.).

Other Democrats have told Axios they believe Biden should exit and more lawmakers are expected to publicly call for his withdrawal in the coming days.

Yes, but: Biden has repeatedly resisted calls to step aside.

    • His campaign communications director Michael Tyler said on MSNBC that the president understands "there are some concerns coming off the debate" but the campaign raised $38 million after that night and is "focused now on moving forward with the campaign and defeating Donald Trump."

Zoom in: Gov. JB Pritzker, a Biden surrogate, joined other Democratic governors at the White House last week for a meeting with the President .

What's next: Both chambers of Congress are back in session Monday.
