Jim Bowden explains why White Sox should seek to trade Luis Robert Jr.

(670 The Score) In working through the beginning stages of their latest rebuilding plan, the White Sox have a few difficult decisions that are looming soon.

White Sox general manager Chris Getz needs to decide whether it’s wise to trade star outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and/or ace Garrett Crochet as the MLB trade deadline looms on July 30. If they're available on the trade market, both Robert and Crochet would be among the most coveted players in all of baseball at this deadline.

As it pertains to Robert, former MLB general manager and current SiriusXM host Jim Bowden believes the White Sox should seriously entertain trading him. Bowden's mindset on the topic revolves around measuring the 26-year-old Robert's prime with the White Sox's own competitive window.

Bowden believes it may take the White Sox six to seven years to reach their goal of sustained success. Robert is under contract control through 2027.

“The question you have to ask if you’re the White Sox and Chris Getz is you got to ask yourself, when we’re ready to win, where is Luis Robert going to be in his career?” Bowden said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Monday. “When you look at it in all seriousness, despite his youthful age of 26, if you want to add six or seven years, which is the minimum, he’s going to be 32 or 33 and he’s not going to be part of your process.

“His prime years are right in front of him. You’ll never get more for Luis Robert than you can get at this trade deadline. You might get similar in this offseason just because you’re controlling him through 2027, which helps for sure. But a contending team that really wants him, they’ll pay more at the deadline than they would at the offseason. If you can turn him into four really good players for the future, it’s kind of silly not to consider it when you look at the timelines.”

Robert was second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2020, when he also won a Gold Glove. He was named an All-Star in 2023 and won a Silver Slugger award, hitting .264 with 38 homers, 80 RBIs and an .857 OPS in 145 games.

Robert is hitting .227 with 10 home runs, 19 RBIs and a .798 OPS in 37 games this season.

The White Sox host the Twins on Monday evening in the opener of a three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field.
