Seven-year-old injured in Gaza bombing arrives in Chicago for treatment

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 7-year-old boy who lost part of his leg in a bombing in Gaza was welcomed on Sunday to Chicago, where he will get medical treatment.

Baraa Hadi Abu Alroos smiled from his wheelchair as he and his family were greeted by dozens of well-wishers at O’Hare Airport.

The group Heal Palestine organized his trip — which he made with his 3-year-old sister and their mother — so the boy could get treated for a partial leg amputation and broken arm.

Abdul Razick told CBS 2 why he and others came out to show support.

“We wanted to make them feel welcome coming to a new country, and the circumstance that they’re in, it’s just very difficult,” he said. “We’re going to let them know: You have the entire community behind you from border to border; it doesn’t matter where. In Chicago, California, Florida [or] New York — we’re all here for you.”

The director of Heal Palestine said Baraa’s father and grandmother were killed in the bombing that injured the boy.

While he’s getting treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children on the city’s West Side, his family will be hosted by members of Chicago’s Palestinian community.
