We tried Axios Chicago readers' favorite French fries

In observance of National French Fry Day on Friday, we asked readers for their local favorites, and we got some golden answers.

Monica's pick: She took reader Stephen S. up on his recommendation to munch some fresh-cut fries at Gene & Jude's in River Grove.

The verdict: Crisp, fat and golden with nice stripes of potato skin, these delicious fries may be even more popular than the hot dog they accompany ($4.37).

• If you wanna skip the hot dog, you can order the fries alone for $3.43.
• Just remember to bring your own ketchup for dipping.

Carrie's pick: Timothy P. sent us to Mr. D's Shish-Kabobs in Montclare, and it did not disappoint.

The verdict: These hand-cut, piping-hot beauties had crispy edges, just slightly burnt like I like, and squishy insides ($2.95).

• I'm convinced that I can taste when oil is dirty, but it's not here. These tasted fresh without any stale flavor.
• Of course, you gotta get the steak sandwich when you go, which put my husband in a pleasant, stuffed haze for the afternoon.

Justin's pick: How does one review french fries? Luckily, Nicholas C. recommended a good spot, Big League Burgers at 3734 W. Irving Park Road.

• The fries were crisp, seasoned and cheap ($3). Overall, I had a very tasty meal while watching the Cubs beat the Orioles.
