(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A sad update to a story we've been following at Montrose Beach. A second of four piping plover chicks has died.

Piping plovers Imani and Sea Rocket started a nest at Montrose Beach this year, with their four eggs hatching June 30 and July 1.

The death of a second chick comes shortly after it was announced that one of the chicks was presumed dead after disappearing.

Chicago Piping Plovers posted an update about the deaths and said monitors did find the chick that went missing. It had died on the protected beach. The chick was taken to Lincoln Park Zoo for a necropsy.

Monitors then observed one of the three surviving chicks struggling late Thursday. It was given oxygen, fluid and warmth but died during the night.

The two remaining chicks have been examined by a veterinarian and banded and have since been observed roaming the beach with one parent and feeding.

Piping plovers are a species of shorebird that is endangered in the Great Lakes.
