Late night storms: Tree limbs fall, light pole goes down in Lake View

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The storms that rolled through the Chicago area Sunday night left behind downed tree limbs.

A large tree was toppled here along DuSable Lake Shore Drive just south of Stratford Place. It split about 20 feet up sending all the branches and a light pole into the street and onto a parked car, although it appears the tree missed most of the car.

The car owner, who’s from Colorado, told WBBM “at least we weren’t in it.”

Laura lives down the block and said things really picked up after 10 p.m.

“Tornado warnings were going, [there was] tons of lightning…The whole sky was lit up, thunder, sheets of rain. It was a very fierce storm,” she said.

Down the block on Hawthorne Place, there was a downed branch, also from a Honey Locust tree.  That fell on the sidewalk, which was littered with other smaller branches. There was some standing water in parts of the street.

As of 12:25 p.m., ComEd reported 610 outages, affecting more than 13,000 homes and businesses. The bulk of the outages are in the city, particularly on the South Side, in the Englewood and Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods. For the suburbs, Markham is leading the way, with more than 900 customers without power.

O’Hare Airport saw 152 delays and 46 cancellations in the last 24 hours. At Midway, it was 49 delays and 11 canceled flights.
