    A magnitude 3.4 earthquake in DeKalb County felt in Chicago area overnight

    A magnitude 3.4 earthquake was recorded at 2:53 a.m. Monday near Somonauk, which is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 6 miles.

    Chicago-area residents also reported light shaking overnight. Did you feel the earthquake? Report it to the U.S. Geological Survey.

    According to the Illinois State Geological Survey, earthquakes occur in Illinois about once every year . A 3.8-magnitude earthquake in Indiana on June 17, 2021, but was also felt by Chicago residents. The last damaging earthquake happened in downstate Illinois in June 1987 .
