MILWAUKEE — The theme of Day 2 at the Republican National Convention is ‘Make America Safe Again,’ with the GOP expected to focus on both crime and border security.

The Republican Party platform approved by former President Trump includes a promise to seal the border and stop the flow of migrants. Policy initiatives include increasing penalties for illegal entry and to begin what they’ve called the largest deportation program in American history.

Republicans also say they’ll cut off federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities like Chicago.

Expect to hear references to Chicago. Trump often pointed to the city’s violence during his first time as an example of failed Democratic policies.

Recently retired Chicago police detective Chuck Hernandez, who now heads the Chicago Republican Party, said the city needs more help from federal partners and thinks Trump will make it happen.

“He cares about Chicago. He cares about the citizens of Chicago. We need Donald Trump because he is committed. He is going to give us the tools to combat crime in our city and we really need that commitment,” Hernandez said.

In April the Biden administration and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland gave Chicago $78 million in grant funding for community-based anti-violence initiatives.

The RNC in Milwaukee goes through Thursday.
