WNBA fans were taken by surprise by the news that the Chicago Sky had decided to trade Marina Mabrey away to the Connecticut Sun. This move comes just a year after the Sky traded for the 5-foot-11 guard in an eight-team blockbuster deal that required Chicago to part ways with multiple first-round and second-round picks.

Mabrey has struggled to find her shot this season, averaging just 38.1 percent from the field on 13.5 attempts per game. Be that as it may, many still saw her as an integral part of the squad, which is why the decision to pull the plug on the Mabrey experiment was unexpected, to say the least.

As it turns out, however, it was Mabrey's desire to jump ship. According to a report by Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times, the 27-year-old actually demanded to get traded.

"This wasn’t a calculated move by [Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca]. Instead, it was a response to a player’s request to be traded , according to multiple league sources," Costabile reported.

Mabrey has gotten her wish, and she now has a clean slate in Connecticut.

For their part, the Sky are expected to receive Moriah Jefferson and future draft assets in exchange for Mabrey. Another player could reportedly be added to the deal that has yet to be finalized.
