The longtime Houston Astros backstop joined the South Siders on a one-year, $4.25 million contract in the offseason. While Maldonado never excelled with his bat, the White Sox hoped he could provide a veteran presence and help the pitching staff with his game-calling.

However, Maldonado quickly became the butt of jokes among Sox fans due to his abysmal offensive output and declining defensive abilities. The 37-year-old slashed a paltry .119/174/.230 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 147 plate appearances before the All-Star break.

Martin Maldonado entered the season as the White Sox' primary catching option but was quickly usurped by youngster Korey Lee. Moving forward, the South Siders figure to lean on Lee behind the plate with Chuckie Robinson serving as his backup.

Robinson, who's slashing .246/.292/.382 in the minors this season, will be recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times .
