CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A historic church in Pilsen is another step closer to receiving landmark status.

Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced Wednesday a proposal to designate the former St. Adalbert Parish complex on 17th and Paulina as an official Chicago landmark.

The landmark status would prevent owners from changing the church's cream-colored exterior and protect the building from demolition.

The Renaissance Revival-style church served as a center of worship for thousands of Polish and Mexican immigrants until it closed in 2019.

The Archdiocese of Chicago, which owns it, has resisted landmark status out of concerns that restrictions would create a financial burden and make it harder to find a buyer for the property.
