Brooks Baldwin Rapidly Rises to the White Sox Amid Roster Shake-Up

The mid-season roster shuffle continues for the Chicago White Sox, who've had a busy All-Star break. As reported Wednesday, the club will designate struggling veteran catcher Martin Maldonado and promote Chuckie Robinson to fill his position. The Sox made the move after adding free agent Nick Senzel , designating Danny Mendick for assignment, and reassigning Lenyn Sosa to Triple-A.

Furthermore, Chicago will promote infielder Brooks Baldwin from Triple-A Charlotte, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times . His elevation to the major-league level raises some eyebrows as his debut with the Charlotte Knights occurred just two weeks ago, on July 4.

Brooks Baldwin hasn't received the fanfare of top-100 prospects such as Drew Thorpe , Edgar Quero, or Colson Montgomery. However, he's excelled at every minor-league stop since the White Sox selected him in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. The soon-to-be 24-year-old's call-up to Triple-A was no surprise as he slashed .322/.386/.441 in 319 plate appearances with Chicago's Double-A affiliate, the Birmingham Barons.

Baldwin didn't miss a beat with the Knights, hitting .345/.441./.655 in eight games . The North Carolina native has played every position on the diamond except pitcher and catcher in his minor-league career. However, most of his playing time will occur on the dirt in the infield at second base and shortstop.

Brooks Baldwin's promotion further signals that the organization is looking to the future. The White Sox, MLB's most rebuilding team, is expected to sell off a significant portion of its major league roster at the July 30 trade deadline. Offseason veteran acquisitions such as Paul DeJong and Tommy Pham are unlikely Chicago residents in August.

Their departures, along with those of Danny Mendick and Martin Maldonado, clear the way for Baldwin and Nick Senzel to prove themselves over the season's final 64 games.
