Cubs starter demanding 'astronomical price' on trade market, per insider

Are the Chicago Cubs toying with the idea of selling off one of their franchise centerpieces?

There's no doubt that contenders are pestering the Cubs about players like Cody Bellinger, Nico Hoerner, Jameson Taillon, and Justin Steele, but at least one of these talents is reportedly staying put at Wrigley Field.

The Athletic MLB Staff reported on Monday that Chicago is unlikely to trade Steele before the deadline.

"The Cubs would set such an astronomical price that there’s no expectation that Steele is about to get traded," The Athletic MLB Staff said. "The Cubs have not approached him about a long-term contract extension, but that possibility could be explored this winter. He’s a player to build around as a homegrown pitcher who sets an example for teammates, works well with the coaching staff and connects with the fans."

Steele's 2-4 record this season does not reflect his value. He had a 3.07 ERA and 87 strikeouts through 91 innings pitched entering Monday. Steele has been one of the Cubs' most consistent stars this year, recently delivering a string of quality, clubhouse-empowering starts.

Steele delivered a viral moment in June when he exploded with passion in Chicago's dugout, an act which endeared him to Cubs Nation.

If general manager Jed Hoyer were to bite on an offer and deal Steele, Cubs players and fans would surely sink into a state of demoralization.

Steele is a central figure in Chicago's culture at present, and it behooves Hoyer to extend Steele and keep the left-hander at Wrigley for the long haul.
