    Big Lots closing three stores in the Chicago area, citing financial hardships

    CHICAGO — Big Lots is preparing to close dozens of stores nationwide and three Chicago area locations are on the chopping block.

    According to the company’s website, Crest Hill , Lockport , and Niles are the three stores closing. Big Lots has not offered a final closing date.

    Founded more than 50 years ago in the Midwest, the longtime retail chain declared in June that it intended to close between 35 and 40 stores this year, according to a U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) filing from the company in June.

    Company leaders said inflation and their inability to compete under economic pressures had raised doubts about their continuing ability.

    Big Lots has 29 locations in Illinois and nearly 1,400 nationwide.
