The first tease of Spiral in a Straight Line comes in the form of opening track “Nobody’s” — a surging, anthemic slice of melodic hardcore in the classic SST vein. The use of major chords and melody, particularly in the astounding scream singing of vocalist Jeremy Bolm, has an uplifting effect, and the bite-sized, two-minute arrangement keeps everything lean and to the point.
“In just a handful of lyrics, it gives the broad strokes of the album,” remarked Bolm in a press release for the album. “A song and record about forward movement while everything around you becomes destabilized.”
Spiral in a Straight Line marks the band’s first new album in four years and was recorded with producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Slipknot, Glassjaw, At the Drive-In). The 11-song LP features two notable collaborations with Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh fame (on “Subversion”) and boygenius’ Julien Baker (on closing track “Goodbye for Now”).
