In an exciting nod to baseball's storied past, Wrigley Field turned into a temporal gateway back to the 1932 World Series on Tuesday. The field welcomed the return of the New York Yankees jersey worn by the legendary Babe Ruth when he made his mythical "called shot" home run against the Chicago Cubs . For a sport that thrives on legacy and lore, this exhibit provided a tangible piece of history.

A Glimpse into Baseball's Legendary Past

This rare reunion with Wrigley Field marks the jersey's first appearance at the stadium in 92 years, stirring emotions and memories among baseball enthusiasts.

Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage Auctions, commented on the historic item's return to the North Side.

"It's the first time in 92 years it's been back on Wrigley Field and the last time, he hit a home run that's still talked about today," Ivy said.

The jersey's journey from a 1932 World Series icon to a coveted collector's item speaks volumes of its historical and monetary value. Ivy revealed the jersey is expected to sell for about $30 million or more, potentially setting a new world record for sports memorabilia when it sells at auction on Aug. 25.

The Legend of Babe Ruth's 'Called Shot'

The legend of Babe Ruth's "called shot" is one of baseball's most enduring tales. During Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, Ruth allegedly gestured toward center field before launching a home run to that exact spot. The moment has since become a defining one in the saga of America's pastime.

"Ruth’s World Series jersey is the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia to be offered at auction in decades," stated Ivy, emphasizing the unparalleled significance of the jersey in the realm of sports history.

From the Field to the Auction Block

After its historic moment in the sun, the jersey led a quiet life until it resurfaced in spectacular fashion. Babe Ruth had gifted the jersey to a Florida man following a round of golf, and it eventually made its way to auction. In 2005, it was sold for $940,000 through Grey Flannel Auctions. That figure will pale in comparison to the bidding war it's expected to ignite next month.
